Carmageddon
Vehicular mayhem with multiple paths to victory
Vehicular mayhem with multiple paths to victory
Carmageddon revives its infamous formula of racing mixed with destruction, letting you win by finishing laps, turning rivals into scrap, or mowing down every pedestrian on the map. In practice, the design clearly favors chaos over clean racing, and going for a traditional lap finish rarely feels like the sensible path. The result is a combat racer where carnage is the core loop, supported by a steady stream of vehicle upgrades that keep your ride evolving.
Moment to moment driving is rough around the edges. Steering feels sluggish and imprecise, undercutting high speed chases and tight turns. The absence of an in-race map makes hunting opponents a chore, so you may spend too long wandering the arena rather than orchestrating satisfying takedowns. Early sessions are gleefully anarchic, but the length of certain events can stretch patience, especially when progression demands a lot of time for modest gains.
There are a few trimmings to sweeten the package. A replay editor lets you relive your worst pileups or best takedowns, and achievements give you targets beyond simple survival. However, the game leans heavily on its legacy to excuse dated elements. Visuals are faithful to the original, which also means flat textures and environments that look and play alike despite different backdrops.
Monetization exists in the form of in-app purchases that open up more cars and races. They can speed things along, though the reminders of their availability do little to mask the grind. For long time fans, the throwback tone and anything goes objectives will land as a nostalgic hit. For everyone else, the limited polish, bland level design, and unwieldy handling make this an entertaining curiosity rather than a must play racer.
