DOOM II returns with non-linear carnage and 20 Master Levels

id Software’s seminal shooter comes back in a faithful port that preserves its brutal essence and labyrinthine stage design. As the nameless marine returns to an Earth overrun by hellspawn, you push through dense, open-ended maps where combat and navigation constantly intertwine. The arsenal covers multiple toolsets for close and mid range encounters, and the moment to moment action still rewards quick positioning and smart resource use.

This version does more than revisit the core campaign. It bundles the Master Levels, a set of 20 additional maps originally released in 1995. These bonus stages broaden the package with fresh arenas and tougher gauntlets, making this release feel more complete than a bare port. If you are returning after years away, the extra content adds welcome variety. If you are new, it offers a substantial expansion after the main story credits roll.

Level layouts remain resolutely non-linear, with routes that branch and loop, encouraging you to learn the space rather than follow a single corridor. That structure keeps firefights varied, since enemies can come from unexpected angles as you double back or probe a new path. The pacing leans into relentless encounters, a hallmark of the original design that still hits hard.

The trade-offs mostly stem from the interface and hardware. On-screen controls can feel sluggish during intense waves, which makes precise strafing and quick weapon swaps harder than they should be. Additionally, the game can run slowly on some devices, affecting responsiveness at busy moments.

Despite these caveats, this is a strong way to experience a landmark shooter. It captures the core appeal of the 1994 sequel and enhances it with the Master Levels, offering a sizable, challenging campaign for anyone eager to revisit or discover a cornerstone of the genre.
