Privacy-first messenger with end-to-end encryption and QR contacts

Threema puts privacy at the center. Messages, photos, videos, and even your current location are encrypted end to end, with keys generated on your device so only you and your intended recipient can read the contents. The service itself does not get access, which sets a clear tone for users who value confidentiality.

Contact handling is built around verification rather than convenience alone. Each profile shows a trust indicator, moving from red to green depending on how you confirmed the person. The most reliable method is an in-person QR scan, and the integrated scanner makes that quick to do. You can also let the app check your address book to discover existing users, then decide case by case whether to add them. If you prefer to keep personal identifiers private, you are free to hide your phone number and email.

Day to day, Threema covers staples like one-to-one and group chats, with group conversations capped at 20 participants. There is a generous library of more than 750 smileys, plus customization options for chat backgrounds and notification styles. You can lock access with a password, and a backup tool preserves chats, contacts, and your unique ID for device changes.

Navigation is solid overall, though not always streamlined. Some actions live in unexpected places. For instance, leaving a group requires a trip to the groups list rather than an option inside the chat itself, and certain menu items feel duplicated. Media management is also basic. If you need to find a photo or video from an older conversation, you will have to scroll, as there is no consolidated gallery view.

If maximal security and clear contact verification are your top priorities, Threema delivers a focused, privacy-forward experience. Expect a few interface quirks and a leaner feature set, but the trade-off will feel worthwhile for users who want control over what they share and with whom.
